Job Description

The Building Automation Lead Installation Technician is responsible for leading the on-site installation, wiring, and commissioning of Building Automation Systems (BAS) for HVAC, lighting, and energy management applications. This position requires overseeing installation teams, coordinating with Control technicians, project managers and other trades, and ensuring that all systems are installed and function according to design specifications. The Lead Installation Technician plays a key role in ensuring the successful completion of projects by providing technical expertise, maintaining high-quality standards, and adhering to project timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership & Coordination:
  • Lead and supervise the on-site installation of building automation systems, coordinating with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and teams. Ensure adherence to design specifications and provide regular project updates.
  • System Installation & Wiring:
  • Perform and oversee the installation and integration of BAS components, wiring, and communication networks, ensuring compliance with industry standards, local codes, and seamless connectivity with existing building systems.
  • Commissioning & Testing:
  • Lead commissioning activities by conducting testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and performance verification, while supporting control technicians, ensuring system compliance with specifications, and documenting results.
  • Troubleshooting & Problem Resolution:
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues encountered during installation and commissioning.
  • Provide guidance and hands-on support to technicians when troubleshooting complex system problems.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with standards, codes, and safety protocols during installations, conduct quality checks, and maintain an organized, safe, and efficient job site.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
  • Maintain detailed installation records, prepare progress reports, review as-built drawings, and document design changes for project updates and client handover.
  • Team Leadership & Training:
  • Train and support junior technicians, manage staffing and resources, and foster teamwork and collaboration among the crew.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a technical certificate or associate degree in electronics, HVAC, or a related field is preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in building automation systems (BAS) installation, including leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of BAS, including HVAC controls, lighting, and energy management systems.
  • Proficient in installing and configuring BAS platforms.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and related network infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex technical issues on-site.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites as required.

Additional Information

  • Regular exposure to construction environments, including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy equipment (up to 75 lbs) and work in various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, or be on-call during emergencies to meet project deadlines.
  • This is a Monday-Thursday Position working 4 10 hour shifts.
