Night Shift Youth Coach
Job Summary
The Summer Youth Coach is a critical position within First Star. Youth Coaches are mentors, supporters, role models and teachers to the First Star scholars. They supervise youth during all activities, provide academic support, develop, coordinate and implement life skills, self-advocacy and social justice curriculums. Youth Coaches also practice restorative justice with youth, remain on call for behavior management needs, and practice boundary-setting with students. Summer Training: Monday, June 9th - Friday, June 20th
Summer Academy: Sunday, June 22rd - Friday, July 18th
Group and Individual Debriefing: Monday, July 21st - Friday, July 25th
During Summer Academy, Youth Coaches will work approximately 36 hours per week distributed across the 7 days of the week. Youth coaches must be available for either all of the day or all of the afternoon/evening shifts, or a variety of both while maintaining on average a 36-hour work-week (this only applies to summer academy; if youth coaches stay on for the remainder of the year they will not be expected to work full-time).
Responsibilities
Stay awake from 11pm to 7am to monitor the common room and hallways of a dorm
Collaborate with other staff to ensure the well-being and safety of youth in the dorms
Collaborate with other staff whenever interacting with youth
Employ non-adversarial approaches to behavior management
Be the first point-of-contact in case of emergencies
Minimum Qualifications
This is a temporary position(s) with the University of Utah First Star Academy for Foster Youth (firststar.utah.edu). The Night Shift Youth Coach will be responsible for monitoring the youth in the dorms at night. We are looking to hire 3-4 people in order to cover all the shifts needed for the entire 4-week program. Position allows for doing activities like reading and homework through the night as long as it is not distracting to the primary responsibilities attached to the position.
