Job Summary
The Academic Advising Center in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Utah is committed to a comprehensive approach to student success. Our advising office strives to proactively implement innovative, evidence-based practices that enhance student success and retention, and that are recognized for excellence across campus and regionally. The Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Advising Office employs proactive advising strategies to: support students in achieving success in their academic, life, and career goals; challenge students to think critically about how their decisions impact their lives and their community; empower future engineers to make lasting contributions to the engineering profession and the well-being of society.
With a high degree of independence, you will use your expert advising skills to assess individual needs, offering tailored advice that promotes academic success and progression toward graduation. You'll play a key role in shaping and enhancing innovative advising programs, ensuring they align with the academic goals of the department. As an advisor in Mechanical Engineering, you'll also have the opportunity to supervise a peer mentor and lead proactive outreach projects, all while maintaining your core focus on impactful student advising.

Responsibilities
1. Meets with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, course planning and registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution or advanced degree requirements.
2. Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate
educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning
obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar
needs.
3. Actively participates in campus-based professional development communities including but not limited to "UAAC or other relevant campus-based organizations that advances direct skills in
academic advising." Duties include participating in sub-committees within the community.
4. Participates in the delivery of proactive advising strategies for assigned student populations on the basis of data analytic platforms.
5. Proficient in degree tracking software (i.e Degree Audit), record keeping systems (PeopleSoft,
Banner) and one additional advising related technology (Navigate, On Base, Student Data Warehouse, CRM software, etc.)
6. Maintains students' academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes
place during each visit.
7. Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness including teaching an academic success seminar each semester.
8. Collects and disseminates information to students, faculty and departments about changes in
major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
9. Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of recruitment, admission and new/transfer student orientation sessions.
10. Serves on University committees and makes recommendations that affect curriculum requirements, advising processes and program development and published materials.
11. Participates in local and national professional associations by serving on planning committees and presenting at conferences and seminars.
12. Contributes to selection and training of new advising staff.
13. May represent department or area at campus-wide meetings and initiatives.
14. May act as a mentor for programming communities for students within their area. Including, but not limited to an existing mentoring program, student organization, etc.
15. The position is distinguished from lower level advising positions in that incumbents have
responsibilities for program development and may deal with more complex advising-related issues. Incumbents also possess a professional knowledge and experience, which allows them to work independently with less supervision and review.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
