Electrician


Job Summary


Performs journeyman or master electrician level electrical work by exercising the acquired and developed skills and knowledge pertaining to the installation, alteration, maintenance, new construction, inspection and repair of electrical distribution systems (including primary and secondary wiring) and of clinical, laboratory and research electrical devices and equipment, emergency power generation systems and other common electrical items used in the University community.


In the hospital positions, a working knowledge of codes and regulations specific to health care facilities is preferred. In the campus positions, a working knowledge of cable splicing and substation maintenance (with its various high voltage switchgear) is preferred.


Responsibilities


• Applies analytical and manual skills in inspecting, maintaining, installing, troubleshooting, calibrating, safety testing and repairing motors, generators, chargers, transformers, high voltage electrical systems and a variety of clinical, laboratory and research equipment including their component parts to ensure maximum and efficient operation.


• Installs new systems and repairs existing wiring systems, electrical conduit, communications systems and related University-owned equipment by adhering to necessary procedures that would ensure conformity with blueprints, OSHA specifications, JCAH and NFPA requirements, national and local electrical codes and requirements of other specialized codes and regulating agencies such as NCCLS, AAMI and CAP.


• Maintains a variety of small electrical devices by repairing or replacing items such as hardware, lamps, fuses, sockets, ballasts, dropping resistors, contacts, coils, switches, timers, bearings, brushes, cords, and plugs as a matter of preventive maintenance and safety considerations.

• Uses a wide variety of machines, electrical hand tools and test equipment commonly used by electricians such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, voltmeters, cable pullers, hirangers, relay testing equipment, stroboscopes, current leakage and safety test equipment, high voltage equipment, conduit benders, volt-amp recording meters, power factor meters, peak demand and watt-hour meters, drante surge and spike detectors and frequency drive testing equipment.


• Responsible for maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the latest national and local electrical codes and if applicable all regulating bodies having responsibility for health care facilities.

• Works with other trades in electrically related problems such as elevator repair, electric bed repair, fire alarm system maintenance and electrical aspects of electronic equipment.


• Responsible for maintaining and periodically updating equipment history log sheets and P.M. order sheets to meet requirement of history and legality for all equipment items.


• May be responsible for training apprentice electricians through "on-the-job" training.

Minimum Qualifications


Journeyman electrician license from the State of Utah or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Experience with electric manholes and underground power distribution systems, proficiency in the use of the various types of electrical test equipment and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.


The journeyman license is obtained through the completion of a comprehensive examination after the completion of a 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program.


Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver's license may be required.


This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.
