About the Utah Olympic Oval

Built in 2001 for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the Utah Olympic Oval houses Utah’s only 400-meter speed skating oval, two international sized ice sheets, and a state-of-the-art four lane 442-meter running track. Today, it is a dynamic multi-use facility focused on developing and growing participation in ice sports in Utah. As a part of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, our mission is to cultivate champions in sport and in life, deliver experiences that inspire communities, and celebrate our Olympic Legacy for years to come.

About the Role

Maintain safe and efficient operations of the Ice Plant and Building operations. Identify key operating systems for capital improvements. 

Major Tasks and Responsibilities (Assist)

  • Perform ALL aspects of Building operation/refrigeration operation
  • Ammonia refrigeration maintenance/operations/ 24/7 on call
  • Ensure all HVAC components are operating correctly and efficiently
  • Perform proper troubleshooting skills (HVAC-R, Control systems, strong low voltage skill’s)
  • Ensure ALL critical safety components for ammonia refrigeration are functioning properly and are in compliance with IIAR.
  • Knowledgeable in building automation systems/Ammonia refrigeration automation systems.
  • Knowledgeable in in house equipment repair (pump rebuilds, fan rebuilds, VFD installs, and new install of critical equipment.
  • Proper communications with inside entities (USS, marketing, clubs, etc) for large scale build out for events
  • General Maintenance assistance throughout the facility
  • Ice rink tear down and set up
  • Ice making
  • Event set up (world cup logistics, Corp buy out, other requested logistics events unplanned)
  • All other duties assigned

Required Knowledge and Essential Skills

  • Building construction, maintenance, repairs, refrigeration and air conditioning, electrical and mechanical systems 
  • Team player with ability to accept and evaluate criticism on ice and facility conditions 
  • Willingness to learn and teach new skills 
  • Established attention to detail 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities 
  • Strong planning and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where extensive standardization exists 
  • Under the supervision of manager or private contractor, is responsible for completing safety training on all equipment and machinery  
  • With increasing expertise should be able to define, develop, and implement training systems/programs  
  • Familiarity with sources of vendors and suppliers 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited 2-year college or university with a degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or closely related field; or a combination of education and relevant experience totalling two years. 
  • Four years’ experience in all facets of refrigeration and building operations at a comparable facility 
  • Refrigerant certified (EPA type universal)
  • A valid Driver’s License  
  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • Flexible work schedule – may need to work late and weekend hours. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in all temperature/weather extremes 
  • Comfortable work near moving mechanical parts 
  • Regularly work near or in areas that hearing protection may be required 
  • Ability to wear the following protective equipment as needed: safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes/boots and gloves 
  • Can frequently lift and or move up to 30 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds 
  • May be exposed to heights and/or work in aerial lift at heights up to 50 feet 
  • May need to drive forklift, aerial lift and scissor lift 
  • May be exposed to fume and or airborne particles 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Hearing - to converse with other is a normal conversation. 
  • Balancing, bending, climbing, kneeling, walking, pushing, reaching above shoulders, and sitting.
