Working a part-time job is a great way to earn some extra income, whether it’s your primary or secondary gig. Sometimes, though, it may feel like you can’t get everything done in the few allotted hours of work. That’s when it’s especially important to maximize your efforts.

Prioritize tasks

Chances are, you have a list of work assignments due at any given time. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it all needs to be done within the next week, or even the next month. At an accounting firm, f

or example, a project relating to tax returns will likely be vital from January through April. In August, it could be set aside for a while.

If you’re unsure which assignments are most important or what you should focus on first, check with your supervisor. They can tell you which items should be at the top of your list. Make a list of short and long term goals, then plan your schedule accordingly.

Break up large assignments so you can fit in small ones.

Time management

Knowing what is most important is only the first step. You’ll also need to allot an appropriate amount of time to complete tasks in your part-time job.

Block your time

If you have a large project and several small ones competing for your attention, determine how much time you’ll need to accomplish each of them. Then, allocate a certain amount of time each day for the various projects.

For instance, you could devote two hours to the large task, then spend the remainder of your time on the others. Consider using a time management app or notebook to help you stay organized.

Batch your projects

Many tasks are similar in scope: making copies, running reports, etc. If you are responsible for sending invoices, for example, it’s much more efficient to stamp them all at once, rather than two or three per day. Even if you don’t want to mail them on the same date, it’s probably quicker to prepare them together.

Keep your work area clean to minimize distractions.

Minimize your distractions

Keeping on task is a challenge for both full-time and part-time employees, particularly when there are multiple projects needing your attention. And that’s especially true if it’s something you’d rather not do at all. Create an environment that will help you stay focused.

  • Use a timer: Set a time limit for a particular task, then move on to the next.
  • Reduce intrusions: Too many text messages? Put your phone away. Too loud? Wear noise canceling headphones.
  • Keep it clean: When your space is organized, you can keep track of materials and paperwork you might need.

Share the load

Sometimes as the person with the part-time job, it can feel like you’re getting all the leftovers. “Hey, glad you’re here. Could you finish this up for me?” But if you have your own tasks to take care of, those singular requests can start adding up and quickly become overwhelming.

Instead of agreeing to do someone else’s work, then grumbling about it later, speak up. You can simply say, “That looks like something Mark is over. Please take it to him.”

Other times, you may end up with too many tasks to handle in your allotted work time. When this happens, look at which jobs require your expertise. If there are assignments that could be completed by someone else, consider handing it off to them — with manager approval, of course.

Take care of yourself by eating healthy snacks and getting in some exercise.

Schedule yourself

If a part-time job is just one of your responsibilities, life can feel pretty busy. Even if you feel like your schedule is just too tight, it’s important to take some time to recharge. Schedule breaks for yourself to get in some exercise, or even just some fresh air. A 15-minute walk is a great way to clear your mind and reinvigorate your soul.

Remember to eat healthy, too. Instead of snacking on a bag of Cheetos and a Diet Dr. Pepper, bring a healthy snack such as nuts or a piece of fruit. The better you feel, the more capable you’ll be in your job.

As you set clear goals and boundaries for yourself, you’ll find it easier to stay productive in your part-time job.
