Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Academic Advisor will play a critical role in proactively supporting students, particularly those with 120+ credit hours, in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences (CSBS ), as they work toward completing their degree requirements. This advisor will focus on monitoring academic progress at 30/60/90 credit hours, identifying students in need of assistance, and providing tailored guidance to ensure timely graduation. This advisor will assess degree audits, assist with course selection and scheduling, and help students overcome academic challenges. Additionally, this advisor will also track student progress through Starfish software and engage in completion initiatives to ensure students stay on track.
As a collaborative partner between students, academic departments, and university advisement, this advisor will work together with others to communicate academic policies & changes. They will foster close relationships with CSBS department chairs and WSU departments to ensure smooth articulation of courses and to best support the academic needs of CSBS students. This role also includes proactive outreach to students regarding registration, barriers or concerns, and academic progression, as well as representing the College during a variety of other events. The advisor will collaborate with student employees, coordinate grant-funded initiatives, and actively contribute to university committees, such as the University Academic Advising Council. Additionally, the advisor will support students’ well-being, assist with career exploration, and stay informed on academic policies and transfer credit processes to effectively guide students in their academic journey.
By providing early intervention, personalized advisement, and proactive support, the advisor will help students navigate their academic journey, stay motivated, and achieve their goals toward graduation.
Required Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
• One year of full-time college employment experience providing enrollment or academic services (academic advising, registration, admissions, or financial aid), student services, or the equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred:
• A Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as Social or Behavioral Sciences, Education, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of three years of full-time experience in academic advising, with a proven track record of supporting student success and retention.
• Bilingual proficiency (Spanish language skills preferred), with the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of student populations.
• Strong event coordination and planning skills, with experience organizing and executing both small and large-scale events.
• Proficient in the use of Google Applications and Banner, with additional familiarity with other relevant platforms and technologies commonly used in higher education settings.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with student populations.
• Excellent public speaking skills, with a capacity to present information clearly and persuasively to individuals and groups.
• An empathetic and service-oriented attitude, with a focus on supporting students in achieving their academic and personal goals.
• Proven ability to motivate and build rapport with students and colleagues, fostering positive relationships within a collaborative environment.
• Highly detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities concurrently.
• Ability to work independently, manage a personalized advising caseload, and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
