In case you haven’t noticed yet, college can be expensive. Even if you were studious enough to get a bit of help with tuition, there are still books, class fees and rent. Oh, and maybe you were thinking you’d like to eat this semester? Once you’ve figured out your class schedule, it’s time to start looking at jobs for college students.

How to find a job

As a student, your work hours are limited. Going to class and getting all that homework done is supposed to be your priority. So finding a part-time job that works with flexible hours will help to make it all more manageable. Use KSL Jobs to discover one that best fit your needs.

You can narrow your search by selecting options in the Job Type section. Choose from part-time, temporary, seasonal or weekend only work.

Refine your search even more with the Location filter. As a college student, you likely won’t have time, or gas money, to work at a long-distance job. If you’re attending Utah State University, for example, a job in Provo isn’t going to be practical.

If you’ve got some years of schooling under your belt, you can also search for listings based on Education Level. All those classes should count for something, right?

Being willing to work early or late might help you find a job in a store.

Retail

In general, stores are open for most of the day, which means there are usually several shifts available. Early morning and late evening work might include stocking shelves, making deliveries or cleaning. If you have an open schedule, with a chunk of free hours, you might work part-time as a cashier or sales associate.

When the school day ends, day care centers need extra help.

Child care

If you thought your days as a babysitter were over, reconsider. Child care could be an ideal part-time job for college students. Individual families may need someone to watch their children for a few hours after school. Child day care centers often need additional help during the early morning and after-school hours, when they have an influx of youngsters.

Not ready for kids? You may also find work as a caregiver for adults, in a private home or at an assisted living center.

Use your studious brain to teach someone else.

Tutor

If you’re proficient in certain scholastic skills, you could be a tutor. Do you actually understand calculus? You’re a shoo-in; math tutors are nearly alway in demand. Have a great command of the English language? You can help someone learn to write better papers.

You can often set your own hours as a tutor, which is definitely helpful when you have a busy schedule. You won’t have total autonomy, of course. You’ll need to be available when your students are.

If it’s for a venue, it could be a permanent position where you have assignments regularly. Or, it could be a temporary, one-time only event. December is especially busy for event centers, so check back often for seasonal opportunities.

Consider an out-of-the-ordinary job to fit your schedule.

Undecided

Maybe nothing sounds quite right. Search the Other category on KSL Jobs to find listings that don’t fit anywhere else. They can vary widely, from dog walker to swim instructor, window washer to costume maker.

Seasonal

If you don’t want to work throughout the school year but still need a little extra cash, consider seasonal work. Major retail stores need extra help during the Christmas holidays, starting as early as October. Or maybe you’d make the perfect Santa’s helper or snow shoveler.

In the spring, when grass begins growing and flower beds need planting, look for yard care and groundskeeping openings. Many municipalities hire college students to mow, fix sprinkler systems, plant flowers and lay sod.
