Job Description

The Building Automation Control Technician is responsible for the installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Building Automation Systems (BAS), including HVAC, lighting, and energy management systems. The technician will work closely with engineers, project managers, and other trades to ensure systems are functioning properly and meet client requirements. This role requires hands-on technical skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of control systems and their components.

Responsibilities

Installation & Configuration:

  • Oversee and assist in the Installation and wire of control devices, sensors, actuators, and controllers for building automation systems.
  • Configure and program BAS controllers, ensuring integration with HVAC, lighting, and energy management systems.
  • Set up communication networks and interfaces for BAS systems, including BACnet, Modbus, and other protocols.
  • Work from wiring diagrams, blueprints, and project documentation to ensure accurate installation.

System Calibration & Commissioning:

  • Perform calibration and tuning of control loops for optimal system performance.
  • Assist in the commissioning process by testing and verifying the functionality of installed systems.
  • Adjust settings and parameters on BAS controllers to meet project specifications and client needs.
  • Perform point-to-point testing to ensure all system components are operating correctly.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot BAS system issues, including sensor failures, communication errors, and control logic problems.
  • Repair or replace defective components such as sensors, controllers, relays, or wiring.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks to ensure optimal system operation and reduce downtime.
  • Monitor and maintain BAS networks to ensure uninterrupted data flow and system performance.

System Integration:

  • Integrate new systems into existing BAS platforms, ensuring seamless operation.
  • Assist with upgrading and expanding BAS systems, including adding new equipment, points, or subsystems.
  • Collaborate with other trades (e.g., electrical, HVAC, IT) to ensure proper integration and system functionality.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of system installations, configurations, and changes.
  • Document any system modifications, including programming updates and field changes.
  • Prepare service reports, highlighting the nature of issues encountered and the corrective actions taken.
  • Provide feedback to engineers and project managers regarding system performance and possible improvements.

Client Support & Training:

  • Provide on-site technical support to clients during system installation and troubleshooting.
  • Offer basic training to clients on system operation and user interfaces.
  • Respond to client inquiries and service requests in a timely and professional manner.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, electrical codes, and company policies during installation and maintenance activities.
  • Perform work in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to job site safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or associate degree in electronics, HVAC, or a related field is a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience working with building automation systems (BAS) or HVAC controls.
  • Strong understanding of BAS control systems, including HVAC, lighting, and energy management systems.
  • Experience with programming and configuring BAS platforms such as ABB, Strato, JCI ECT.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Good communication skills and customer service orientation.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as needed.

  • Work may involve exposure to construction environments, including rooftops, mechanical rooms, and electrical rooms.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy equipment (up to 70 lbs) and work in confined spaces.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours or be on call for emergency situations.
