Job Description

The Assistant Project Manager (APM) supports the Project Manager in delivering construction projects safely, on time, within budget, and to the expected quality standards. This role is a blend of administrative coordination, field presence, and technical understanding. The APM will assist in overseeing daily project activities and maintaining open communication between team members, subcontractors, and clients. This position is intended as a growth role toward full Project Management responsibilities.

As part of a design-build firm, the APM will regularly coordinate with both construction and architectural teams to support seamless project delivery and collaborative problem-solving.

Responsibilities

Support the Project Manager with daily project coordination and execution.

Assist in enforcing safety policies and verifying safety compliance on the jobsite.

Track project schedules and help identify areas where adjustments may be needed.

Monitor costs and help ensure financial alignment with the project budget.

Participate in subcontractor coordination, RFIs, submittals, and change order processes.

Prepare documentation for progress updates, pay applications, and internal reporting.

Attend project meetings and prepare meeting minutes.

Help manage document control, including drawings, contracts, submittals, and correspondence.

Support quality control efforts and follow up on punch list items and closeout tasks.

Assist with project startup, including gathering permits, creating startup checklists, and setting up job files.

Help maintain accurate and organized project records (digital and physical).

Communicate with the Superintendent and field staff to understand jobsite needs and coordinate responses.

Maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, and subcontractors, representing the company professionally.

Look for opportunities to improve processes and add value to the project team.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent with exposure to construction concepts.
  • Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field.

Certifications

  • Required: OSHA 10 Hour Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Preferred: LEED Certification, trade certifications, or other construction safety/design credentials.

Experience

  • Required: 1–2 years of relevant experience as a Project Engineer, Field Coordinator, or similar support role in construction.
  • Preferred: Experience working with design-build teams and on a variety of project types (commercial, healthcare, industrial, etc.)

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of construction processes, sequencing, and terminology.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, project management software (UDA or similar), and scheduling tools.
  • Familiarity with construction documentation (RFIs, submittals, change orders).
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines across different projects.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to navigate active construction sites, climb ladders, and walk uneven surfaces.
  • Able to work at a computer for extended periods as needed.

Mental Requirements

  • Comfortable with math, scheduling concepts, and interpreting data.
  • Able to think spatially and visualize construction details in 3D from 2D plans.
  • Able to communicate clearly in English; Spanish proficiency is a plus.
